Why do we not fill certain tanks?

All aluminum scuba tanks are made out of aluminum alloys. Certain aluminum alloys have shown that they are susceptible to cracking after long periods of use. The tanks that contain these certain alloys (listed below) are often 20+ years old.

When cracks form in these tanks, they become dangerous to everyone who uses them. These cracks frequently can pass through hydro unnoticed; the most common method to find them is through eddy current inspections, which can also produce false-negatives.

The tanks are most dangerous to fill station operators, simply because they are pressurizing the tanks (divers de-pressurize them).

We here at Diversions had a friend tragically killed when an aluminum tank exploded at a fill station. Because safety is the most important consideration in everything we do here at Diversions, we feel that the benefit of filling a few more tanks a year does not outweigh the cost of an employee's life. More so, the cost of a new aluminum tank is minimal when put in comparison with the cost of a human life. It simply isn't worth the risk for us.

We apologize for any inconvenience this poses to our customers. We understand any frustration with this policy, but we also ask that you understand our precarious position.

To accommodate our customers, we are instituting a trade-in program. Give us your old tanks to dispose of properly, and we will give you $20 towards the purchase of a new tank.

Bring any tank with the following markings, and take advantage of this deal today. Help keep the scuba industry safe!
