Introductory Cave Diver

Prerequisites
Divers interested in the IANTD Introductory Cave Diver Course must be Advanced Open Water certified, 15 years of age, and have a minimum of 25 logged dives.

 

Performance Requirements

  • Land Drills
  • Use of guidelines
  • Following guide lines with and without vision
  • Lost diver procedure
  • 4 to 6 dives must be completed
  • Minimum 90 minutes bottom time (no crediting of previous time)
  • One confined water dive must be conducted:
  • Have 2 divers, starting at a distance of 40 feet apart, swim in a simulated out of air situation (without breathing and exhaling slowly) towards each other with eyes closed, following a guide line, and begin gas sharing.
  • Gas matching must be done on every dive
  • After resting for 3 breaths, divers should swim following the guideline to its source, while continuing to share breathing gas.  Both divers must maintain contact with the line.
  • Share gas along line for a reasonable distance while on a cave dive
  • Simulate gas failure with valve shutdowns for both primary and secondary regulators.  The entire drill must be completed in less than 1 minute.
  • Practice regulator shutdowns while swimming without a noticeable change in swim pace.
  • Practice use of reels and lines.
  • With eyes closed, follow line and maintain contact with both the buddy and guideline (while on a cave dive)
  • Share gas and maintain contact with line while keeping eyes closed or lights off (while on a cave dive)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in propulsion techniques taught in previous courses. 
  • Share gas with first diver leading by 3 body lengths.  Second diver, while simulating an out of air situation, gets lead diver’s attention and begins to share gas for a reasonable distance. 
  • During at least one cave dive, the students is to do an out of air drill at a random selection time and with the buddy being aware of whether it is a real or practice session
  • Perform an ‘S’ drill prior to commencement of all dives

 

Equipment Requirements

  • Double tanks with isolation manifold
  • Wing style Bladder- minimum 55 lb lift.
  • Harness System
  • Reel with at minimum 150 ft of line
  • Two first stages  (two second stages, two inflator hoses, and one pressure gauge)
  • 5 to 7 ft long hose for primary second stage
  • Two cutting devices
  • Two bottom timers/depth gauges (or computers)
  • Bungee necklace
  • Wrist Slate
  • Pocket slate
  • BC Pocket- if not on drysuit
  • Non-directional line markers – cookies or clothes pins
  • Primary light source
  • 2 secondary/ back-up lights
  • 2 reels total- one primary and one cavern reel
